A travel deal checklist for comparing promo codes against baggage fees, resort fees, cancellation rules, blackout dates, and refund risk.

Travel promo codes can be useful, but travel is one of the easiest categories to misjudge. A small booking discount can disappear after baggage fees, resort fees, taxes, date restrictions, or a nonrefundable rate. Use this checklist before treating a travel coupon as the best deal.

Write down the full trip price before applying a code: base fare or room rate, taxes, mandatory fees, baggage, seat selection, parking, resort fees, cleaning fees, and cancellation costs. Then apply the promo code and compare the real difference.
Travel codes often apply only to selected dates, destinations, cabin classes, properties, minimum stays, or booking channels. If your itinerary is fixed, read the restrictions before you spend time chasing a code that cannot apply.

The U.S. Department of Transportation explains that airline refund rights can apply in situations such as airline-cancelled flights when the traveler chooses not to accept alternatives, and it describes the 24-hour reservation rule for certain bookings made at least seven days before departure. Those protections are not the same as every hotel, rental car, package, or third-party booking rule. Read the exact terms for your booking path.
| Travel item | What to compare | Common coupon trap |
|---|---|---|
| Flights | Total fare, bags, seats, schedule, refund rules | Promo applies only to base fare or selected routes |
| Hotels | Nightly rate, taxes, resort fees, cancellation deadline | Discount rate is prepaid or nonrefundable |
| Rental cars | Base rate, taxes, insurance, mileage, pickup location | Airport fees erase the code value |
| Vacation rentals | Cleaning fee, service fee, cancellation policy | Percent discount hides large fixed fees |
A travel portal may show a lower price, cash back, or promo code, but changes and refunds may need to go through that portal instead of the airline, hotel, or rental company. If flexibility matters, compare the direct booking price and the portal price side by side.
