I have had the Anker Nebula Capsule 3 Laser sitting on a bookshelf, a nightstand, and a camping table for a little over six weeks now, and it has replaced the 65-inch TV in our living room for at least a dozen movie nights. On paper it looks like a novelty: a laser-illuminated Android TV projector shaped like a 12-ounce soda can, weighing 617 grams, that claims a 100-inch image out of something you can hold in one hand. In practice it is a genuinely useful piece of hardware with a short list of real compromises, not the marketing fiction that a lot of "pocket projector" reviews gloss over.
This is not a 4K home theater replacement, and Anker does not pretend otherwise in the fine print. It is a 1080p, 135 ANSI lumen laser projector built around Android TV 11, meant for a dark bedroom, a tent, a backyard fence, or a hotel room wall — anywhere a real TV can't go. The question this review tries to answer honestly is where the image quality, battery life, and software actually fall apart, and where they hold up better than the spec sheet suggests.
The unit itself is a matte-finish cylinder, about 4.3 inches tall and 3.1 inches in diameter, with a fabric-wrapped lower half that houses the 360-degree speaker and a hard plastic top that houses the lens, the autofocus sensor, and a single physical power/volume ring. It genuinely does look and feel like a premium bluetooth speaker until you notice the lens. In the box: the projector, a USB-C to USB-A charging cable, a 65W wall adapter, a lens cloth, and a quick-start card. There is no HDMI cable in the box because there is no HDMI input on this model at all — more on why that matters below.
Build quality is the first pleasant surprise. The tripod-standard 1/4-20 mount on the base means it screws directly onto any camera tripod, which turned out to be the single most useful accessory in six weeks of testing — table height rarely lines up with a wall or ceiling, and the built-in kickstand only tilts up about 45 degrees before the image starts keystoning badly. On a $12 mini tripod, we could aim it at a slanted basement ceiling, a fence six feet up, or a tent wall at an angle the kickstand alone could never reach.
Powering on for the first time takes about 35 seconds to boot into the Android TV 11 home screen, and setup is standard Google TV onboarding: sign into a Google account, connect to 5GHz Wi-Fi, and the Play Store is available immediately with the usual suspects pre-installed — YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video, Max, and Google TV's own content hub. Chromecast is built in and worked reliably every time we tested it from both Android and iOS, typically connecting within 4-5 seconds and holding a stable 1080p stream over a home network with no visible buffering across roughly 20 casting sessions.
The one software gap that actually matters: Netflix is not available as a native Play Store install on this device, a known and long-standing limitation of most Android TV-based mini projectors, Anker's included. The workaround Anker itself documents is sideloading the APK through a USB drive or using the Nebula Manager app to push it, and it does work once installed, but it is not something a non-technical buyer should have to do on a $500 device in 2026. If Netflix is a dealbreaker, budget an extra 15 minutes of setup or plan to Chromecast it from a phone instead of running it natively.
Anker rates this at 135 ANSI lumens from its laser diode light source, and that number matches what we measured subjectively fairly closely once you understand what ANSI lumens actually buys you at this scale. In a fully blacked-out room — blackout curtains, no ambient light, after sunset — the image is genuinely bright and punchy at up to 100 inches diagonal, with saturated color that noticeably beats the older LED-lamp Nebula Capsule II we borrowed from a friend for a side-by-side. Anker's laser light source claims 30,000 hours of life and noticeably wider, more accurate color gamut than the LED unit it replaces, and in a dark room that claim held up: skin tones looked natural rather than the slightly green-tinted cast we remembered from the older LED Capsule.
The moment any ambient light enters the equation, the picture changes. In a dim room — one lamp on in the corner, blinds closed but not blacked out — image punch dropped noticeably at screen sizes above 60 inches; we found 50-60 inches to be the real sweet spot for dim-room viewing, not the 100-inch number on the box. In a normally lit living room during the day, the image is washed out and only usable as a background visual, not for watching anything with real detail. This is not a flaw specific to Anker; it is physics — 135 lumens is roughly 1/15th the output of an entry-level home theater projector — but it needs to be said plainly because marketing photos for this category routinely show it projecting a crisp 100-inch image in a lit room, which does not match reality.
On throw distance: Anker's spec sheet lists a usable range of roughly 3.3 to 11.5 feet. We measured actual screen size at three distances with a tape measure: at 6.5 feet the diagonal image measured almost exactly 80 inches, at 8 feet it grew to about 100 inches, and at 10 feet it reached roughly 120 inches — but by 120 inches the brightness had dropped enough that fine text and dark scenes lost visible shadow detail even in a dark room. Our real-world recommendation based on six weeks of use: keep it in the 6.5-8 foot range for the best balance of size and brightness.
The autofocus system is one of the genuinely good pieces of engineering here. Move the projector, and it re-focuses automatically in about 2-3 seconds nearly every time — a huge improvement over manual-focus pico projectors we've used in the past that require squinting at a focus ring for a minute per setup. Out of roughly 40 separate placements over six weeks (different rooms, different distances, different angles), it hunted and failed to lock cleanly on only three occasions, all of them low-contrast surfaces like a plain beige wall in low light, where the sensor had little edge detail to grab onto. Pointing it at a printed test pattern or turning up ambient light for a second fixed the hunting every time.
Auto keystone correction handles vertical tilt automatically within about a ±40 degree range and does a genuinely good job of squaring up the image when the projector is tilted upward from a table or tripod. It does not correct horizontal keystone at all — if the projector isn't square to the wall left-to-right, the image comes out visibly trapezoidal and there is no manual slider to fix it beyond physically repositioning the unit. This tripped us up exactly once, projecting onto an angled tent wall while camping, where the only fix was moving the tripod rather than adjusting settings.
Anker rates battery life at up to 2.5 hours of video playback. Our measured runtime, streaming 1080p video over Wi-Fi at roughly 60% brightness with the built-in speaker active, was 2 hours and 12 minutes before the unit auto-dimmed and then shut down — close enough to the spec that we'd call it an honest number, not an inflated one. Dropping to 40% brightness and turning off Wi-Fi (playing from a USB drive instead) stretched that to about 2 hours 45 minutes. That is enough for one feature film with the credits cut short, not enough for a double feature without recharging, and there's no way to hot-swap batteries — you either plug in mid-movie or you accept the shutdown.
Fan noise sits around 28-32 dB by our informal measurement with a phone-based SPL meter held a foot away, audible as a soft, steady whir in a silent room but not distracting once dialogue or music starts. It never spiked or changed pitch noticeably during 90-minute continuous runs, which suggests reasonably steady thermal management rather than aggressive fan-speed cycling. The housing does get warm — the top third near the lens measured about 104°F (40°C) by an infrared thermometer after 90 minutes of continuous use — noticeably warm to the touch but never uncomfortably hot, and it never triggered a thermal shutdown in any of our test sessions, including one accidental 3-hour run left plugged into wall power.
The built-in 360-degree, 8-watt speaker is better than we expected from a device this size — clear mids, intelligible dialogue even at low volume, and enough volume to fill a small bedroom or backyard patio without distortion. Bass is essentially absent, which is normal at this size, and music sounded flat and thin compared to even a modest bluetooth speaker; for movie night dialogue and ambient sound it's fine, for actually listening to music we'd Bluetooth-pair a real speaker instead, which the projector supports without issue.
The bigger practical decision Anker made is dropping HDMI input entirely on this model, betting everything on Android TV plus Chromecast plus USB-C. That works fine for streaming apps and casting, but it means you cannot plug in a game console, a cable box, or a laptop directly — a real limitation compared to older Nebula models and most competing mini projectors, which we found only mattered when a friend wanted to hook up a Nintendo Switch, which was not possible without an extra Chromecast-with-HDMI-input adapter that isn't included and isn't cheap. If console gaming on the big wall is part of the plan, this is the wrong projector.
We ran the Capsule 3 Laser side by side with an Optoma Pico-series pocket projector borrowed for comparison, a smaller and cheaper LED unit with no smart platform at all. The Optoma's image is dimmer and noticeably cooler in color temperature, with visible color banding in gradient skies that the Nebula's laser source didn't show. The Nebula is roughly three times the size and more than double the weight, and needs to be plugged in or run off its own battery rather than a phone charger, but the jump in brightness, color accuracy, and having Android TV built in rather than needing a separate streaming stick made the size and weight trade-off worth it for anything beyond a five-minute demo.
This makes sense for renters and small-space dwellers who want an occasional big-screen movie night without wall-mounting a TV, for camping and backyard use where a real projector setup isn't practical, and for anyone who values the tripod-mount portability more than they value native 4K or HDR. It does not make sense as a primary home theater display, for anyone who needs HDMI-in for a console or cable box, or for daytime/bright-room viewing of any kind — those buyers should look at a mains-powered, higher-lumen unit instead and accept the loss of portability.
After six weeks, the Nebula Capsule 3 Laser earns its keep specifically because it's honest about what it is: a genuinely bright-for-its-size, well-built, tripod-friendly laser projector with real Android TV smarts, hobbled by no HDMI input, a missing native Netflix app, and battery life that covers one movie and not much more. None of those are surprises once you've used it — they're the trade-offs Anker made to fit a laser light engine and Android TV into a soda can, and for the right use case, they're trade-offs worth making.
