Coros built its reputation on watches that runners actually trust for racing, not just step-counting, and the Pace 3 is the model that made that reputation affordable. At $229 it costs less than half of most AMOLED flagship running watches, yet it ships with dual-frequency GPS, a claimed 24-day everyday battery life, and a case that weighs about as much as a granola bar wrapper. We wore it for six weeks of half-marathon build-up — easy midweek jogs, one long run every Sunday, two structured interval sessions a week, and a 10K time trial on a certified course — to find out whether the plainer screen and lower price come with any real cost.
The unit we tested is the nylon-band version, which Coros lists at 30 grams including the strap — light enough that we genuinely forgot it was on the wrist during a few of the longer Sunday runs. The silicone-band version adds roughly 4 grams. Either way, it's dramatically lighter than most AMOLED running watches in this price bracket, which tend to sit closer to 45-53 grams once you add the brighter screen and bigger battery needed to feed it.
The retail box is small: the watch, a two-pin magnetic charging clip, and a quick-start card in eleven languages. No spare bands, no screen protector, no dongle — Coros clearly spent the packaging budget on the watch itself rather than accessories. The 42mm case is polymer, not metal, and it shows a little at the bezel edges under close inspection, but it's stiff and hasn't picked up a single crack or deep scratch after six weeks that included two accidental drops onto a garage floor.
Buttons, not a touchscreen, run the whole interface: five physical buttons (digital crown-style dial plus four side buttons) handle every menu, workout start, and lap split. That's a deliberate design choice — buttons work with sweaty fingers and winter gloves in ways touchscreens don't — but the learning curve is real. It took us most of week one to stop reaching for the screen to swipe and start remembering which button combination backs out of a menu versus starts a workout.
Pairing to the Coros Training Hub app on iOS took under three minutes, including a firmware update that installed itself without a restart loop. The app immediately pulled in our profile basics — age, weight, resting heart rate estimate — and offered a choice of running plans (5K, 10K, half, or full marathon) built around a target date. We picked the half-marathon plan already in progress and the app slotted itself around the sessions we'd already logged elsewhere that week, which was a nice touch most budget running watches skip.
One setup quirk worth flagging: the watch defaults to "all systems" GNSS mode, which burns battery fastest. Finding the toggle to switch between GPS-only, dual-frequency, and the various "UltraMax" battery-saving GPS modes takes three menu levels, and Coros doesn't explain the battery-life trade-off of each mode on-device — you have to read the online manual or guess. We didn't find the right setting for our normal training runs until day four.
In 24/7 smartwatch mode — always-on display, sleep tracking, periodic heart rate sampling, phone notifications — the Pace 3 drained an average of 4% per day across our test period, which lines up closely with Coros's 24-day claim (100% ÷ 4% ≈ 25 days). We charged it exactly twice in six weeks: once at the two-week mark and once at week five, both times topping up from around 15% remaining.
That number changes fast once GPS activities enter the picture. A standard 45-minute GPS run (no dual-frequency, optical heart rate on) cost us roughly 3-4% of battery, working out to a real-world runtime closer to 20-22 hours of continuous GPS tracking rather than Coros's marketing ceiling. Switch on dual-frequency GNSS — the mode that actually improves accuracy near buildings and under tree cover — and the drain roughly doubles: a 90-minute long run in dual-frequency mode cost us about 12-13% of the battery, projecting out to somewhere around 12 hours of continuous dual-frequency tracking, well short of Coros's advertised figures for that mode.
For context on what that means in practice: a runner doing five 45-60 minute sessions a week in standard GPS mode, plus all-day wear, could realistically go 10-12 days between charges. Someone training for an ultramarathon and running the watch in dual-frequency mode for every long session will see that drop to closer to a week. Either way, it's a different category of battery anxiety than the 1-2 day cycle you get from most AMOLED sports watches.
We ran the same certified 10K loop — a local race course with course markers every kilometer and a measured finish — three separate times over the six weeks: once with dual-frequency GNSS on, once with it off, and once wearing the Pace 3 alongside a phone running a separate GPS tracking app as a cross-check. With dual-frequency enabled, the watch logged the course at 10.04-10.07 km across the three laps of testing, a variance of well under 1% from the certified distance. With dual-frequency off, the same route came back between 9.89 km and 10.18 km — noticeably noisier, especially through a half-mile stretch that runs under a highway overpass and between two rows of three-story buildings downtown.
The overpass segment is a genuinely useful stress test because GPS signal reflects off buildings and gets briefly blocked by the concrete overhead, and it's where cheaper watches tend to show a visible "jump" on the map — the track spikes sideways by 30-50 meters and then snaps back. In dual-frequency mode, the Pace 3's track through that same stretch stayed within about 8 meters of the actual sidewalk. With dual-frequency off, we saw two jumps of roughly 20 meters across three passes through the same spot.
On open, unobstructed courses — a waterfront path with no overhead cover — both modes tracked essentially identically, within 0.5% of the actual distance on every run. The takeaway: dual-frequency is worth the battery cost specifically in dense urban routes or heavy tree cover, and largely unnecessary everywhere else, which is exactly why having the option to toggle it (rather than one fixed GPS mode) matters for real-world battery planning.
The Pace 3 uses a 1.2-inch transflective MIP (memory-in-pixel) display rather than an OLED or AMOLED panel. That's the single biggest visible difference between this watch and pricier rivals, and it's the trade-off that funds both the light weight and the long battery life. In direct summer sun, the screen is genuinely excellent — better than any AMOLED panel we've tested, because transflective displays use ambient light rather than fighting against it, so the brighter the sun, the more legible the numbers get. On an overcast day or indoors, it needs the backlight, which activates on wrist-raise or button press and adds a faint half-second delay before the display is readable.
Where the screen struggles is off-axis viewing — glancing down at the watch while it's angled away from your eyeline, which happens constantly on a bent running arm. Contrast drops noticeably past about a 45-degree viewing angle, to the point that during a few tempo efforts we had to consciously rotate the wrist to read our current pace rather than glancing naturally. It's a real limitation of MIP technology generally, not a flaw specific to this watch, but it's worth knowing before you buy expecting AMOLED-level viewing angles at every price point.
Coros estimates running power straight from the wrist using accelerometer data, no footpod or chest strap required. We cross-checked it against a chest-strap running dynamics sensor over eight separate sessions covering easy runs, tempo efforts, and 400m repeats. On steady-state efforts — easy runs and tempo work at a consistent pace — the Pace 3's wrist-based power numbers landed within about 5-8% of the chest-strap reference, close enough to be useful for tracking week-to-week training load trends.
On interval sessions with sharp pace changes, the gap widened: during 400m repeats with 200m jog recoveries, wrist-based power estimates lagged the actual effort by roughly one interval, consistently under-reading power during the first 10-15 seconds of each hard rep and over-reading it into the recovery jog. That's a known limitation of accelerometer-only power estimation without a footpod, and it means the Pace 3's power numbers are trustworthy for pacing long steady efforts but should be taken as a rough guide, not gospel, for anything with rapid surges.
Vertical oscillation and ground contact time — both measured from the wrist's motion pattern rather than a chest strap — tracked consistently within our test group's known ranges (established previously using a lab-grade running-dynamics pod), typically within 1-1.5 cm for vertical oscillation and within about 8-10 milliseconds for ground contact time. Cadence, unsurprisingly, was the most reliable metric across every session, essentially matching a metronome-based cadence app stride for stride.
The magnetic charging clip snaps on with a satisfying click and doesn't fall off during normal handling, which is more than we can say for some competitors' pogo-pin cradles. A full charge from empty took 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes across three test charges, and the watch is usable (though it displays a small lightning bolt icon and limits some backlight behavior) after about 20 minutes on the clip if you're in a genuine rush before a race.
Sync reliability with the Training Hub app was strong but not flawless. Across roughly 35 logged activities, 33 synced automatically within a minute of ending the workout. Two sessions required a manual pull-to-refresh in the app after the watch appeared to sync but the activity didn't show up — both times it was a completed interval workout with a lot of lap splits, which suggests larger data payloads occasionally stall the Bluetooth handoff. Neither export we needed was ever lost permanently; a force-close-and-reopen of the app always recovered the missing session.
We didn't run the Pace 3 head-to-head against a Garmin Forerunner during this test, but the shape of the trade-off is worth spelling out for anyone cross-shopping. Garmin's mid-range AMOLED watches deliver a noticeably brighter, more colorful display with better off-axis legibility, at the cost of roughly double the price and a battery that needs charging every 2-4 days in smartwatch mode rather than every 1-2 weeks. If you value a watch you can glance at like a phone screen and don't mind more frequent charging, that trade makes sense.
The Pace 3's case for itself is different: it's a watch built around not thinking about charging, priced closer to a mid-range fitness band than a flagship sports watch, while still including the dual-frequency GPS chipset that used to be exclusive to $500+ watches just a few years ago. It's a value-and-endurance argument, not a display-quality argument, and the two watches are really answering different questions about what a runner wants most.
This watch makes the most sense for runners training for their first half or full marathon who want real dual-frequency GPS accuracy and structured training plans without spending $400-500, for ultra and trail runners who prioritize multi-day battery life over screen brightness, and for anyone who has been burned by charging anxiety on a previous smartwatch-style running watch. It's a poor fit if you want a do-everything smartwatch with contactless payments, a bright always-legible screen for reading messages at a glance, or a touchscreen interface — the Pace 3 doesn't try to be any of those things, and the button-only interface takes real adjustment time.
It's also worth a pass if you exclusively run short, easy mileage with no interest in structured training plans, GPS accuracy in dense cities, or multi-week battery stretches — at that point, a $100-150 basic GPS watch covers the same ground and the Pace 3's extra capability goes unused.
After six weeks of half-marathon build-up, two charging sessions, and one certified 10K used purely to test GPS drift, the Coros Pace 3 earned a permanent spot in our running drawer over watches that cost twice as much. The screen is plainer, the interface takes longer to learn, and wrist-based running power drifts during hard intervals — real, specific trade-offs, not marketing footnotes. But the combination of accurate dual-frequency tracking, a genuinely light 30-gram case, and battery life measured in weeks rather than days makes it one of the easiest watches to recommend to a runner who wants serious training data without a serious price tag or a serious charging habit.
